  • Multi-Sports Parent/Carer Session

    Fri 29 Mar 2019

It has been a great few weeks of Multi-Sports at Westfield Infant School. It is nice to see the children so engaged with lots of smiles on their faces. The children have been developing their skills and learning new ones. There has been a focus on: catching, throwing, hand-eye coordination, balancing, shooting and aiming.

Parents/Carers were invited to participate in today's session. This also gave the chance for the children to showcase the skills which have been taught. It was great to see so many people turn up to support the children during this session.

  • Year 1 workshops with Catherine Barr

    Wed 27 Mar 2019

Catherine Barr told us about her love for turtles and introduced us to the 7 different types of turtles including the Hawksbill, Leatherback, Flatback and Green Turtle.  Can you remember the other 3?

Catherine told us how turtles hatch from eggs and start their lives by stumbling across the beach to go into the sea!  They then begin the 'lost' years in which scientists believe only one out of a thousand survive.

Catherine went on to tell us how turtles are in danger of becoming endangered because of the rubbish dumped in the ocean. We thought about how we can take action to prevent this.  What could we do?  or what should we stop doing?

It was great to listen to Catherine tell us about her life and what inspired her to write the books we saw today.

It has inspired us to write a letter to the Prime Minister informing her of the current problems surrounding rubbish and endangered sea creatures.  Have a look through our photos!

  • Catherine Barr

    Wed 27 Mar 2019

Today we met Catherine Barr in assembly.  She was here to tell us all about being an author and all about the amazing books she has written.

Catherine told us how she writes about things she is interested in and a lot of people help her to do this (including Boo the dog).

One of Catherine's favourite animals is the Pangolin and she showed us this short clip.  Pangolins are the most hunted animal in the world and are endangered because people kill them for meat and to use their scales as medicine.

  • Year 1 Computing Family Learning session

    Tue 26 Mar 2019

Today, some of the Year 1 parents/carers were joined by their children as they explored the devices, software and apps that children have been using in Computing sessions so far this year. Pupils were able to put their coding skills to the test, navigating Beebots around world maps. As well as this, children worked with their adult to create simple fact files about a favourite topic of theirs. They used www.kiddle.co to safely search the internet for images and information and presented this using Microsoft Office Word. As well as all of this, we were all reminded of the importance of using technology and the internet safely and responsibly

Thank you to all parents/carers who could attend. The children enjoyed sharing their learning with you this afternoon.

  • Visiting an Orchestra

    Fri 22 Mar 2019

Yesterday some pupils had the chance to see and hear some instruments from an orchestra during a visit to Dorothy Goodmans.

We were introduced to lots of instruments, violins, a viola, a cello and a double bass.  The double bass was VERY big!  There was also a clarinet, a guitar, a trumpet and a instrument that looks a lot like the glockenspiels we have at Westfield Infant School but this one was much bigger and called a vibraphone.

We joined in with singing some songs and used our bees and planets when we listened to Flight of the Bumble Bee and Going into Space.

  • NSPCC Speak Out Stay Safe Assembly

    Tue 19 Mar 2019

Today during assembly we were joined by Shelly and her friend Buddy. Shelly told everyone about Children's Rights:

    • The right to speak out and be heard
    • The right to be safe
    • The right to get help when we need it

We watched a film about a girl called Sam. Some people were not very nice to Sam.

Can you remember the things that happened to Sam that made her feel sad?

Sam decided that she would like to talk to a grown up at school. One day she was feeling very brave and she told her teacher. Her teacher listened and she got help for Sam. Things started to get better and Sam was happy and safe.

The children told Buddy about all the adults in school they can talk to who will help them. There are a lot!

The children also told Buddy about the adults out of school who can help.

Shelley reminded everyone that it is a good idea to talk to your friends if you are sad but you also need to tell a grown up.

Everyone used a whisper voice to say:

'I have the right to speak out and stay safe'

Then in a classroom voice we said:

'I have the right to speak out and stay safe'

Finally in a playground voice we said:

'I have the right to speak out and stay safe'

Shelly and Buddy told us about the ChildLine number which is a free number and there are people at ChildLine ready to listen and help children whenever they need it.

We learn the number 0800 1111

Can you show your adults at home how to sign this number?

  • Red Nose Day Assembly

    Fri 15 Mar 2019

As today is Red Nose Day lots of people (including Rowland) wore their red noses into assembly today.

Mrs MacLauchlan told us what the money raised on Red Nose Day is spent on and how it helps children all over the world.

Every class told us a joke!  Which one was your favourite?

We watched the official Red Nose Day song and joined in with the Makaton and some of the words 'Put a nose on it!' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nqv9RZc1ilc

Finally Mrs MacLauchlan told us that we can also recycle our noses at Sainsbury's (the Eco-Warriors are VERY pleased). If you would like us to take your nose to the collection point please put it in the Sainsbury's carrier bag in the entrance area.

  • Class 2 Assembly - Artists

    Thu 14 Mar 2019

Today Class 2 told us all about the artists they have been learning about.  We were shown some beautiful artwork inspired by Van Gogh, Mondrian and Lowry and some of the children told us about it and why they liked it.

Miss Ellis then told us the a story about a little girl called Katy who visited an art gallery with her Grandma.  Lots of magical things happened in the art gallery.  Can you remember what it was?

Class 2 finished the assembly by singing one of Mrs MacLauchlan's favourite songs.  It even had a special extra verse all about sunflowers.

Well done Class 2!  Fantastic speaking, acting, singing and art work.  What a great assembly.

  • Commonwealth Day 2019

    Mon 11 Mar 2019

Today the pupils learned about the Commonwealth, including what it is and who is part of it. Pupils found out that this year marks an anniversary. Can you remember how many years the modern Commonwealth has existed?

The pupils completed activities to support their understanding of the importance of the Commonwealth, including their values and the opportunities for sportsmen and sportswomen to participate in the Commonwealth Games.

You could carry out some research to remind yourselves of the values that each of the Commonwealth countries holds - many are very similar to our British Values!

Can you remember when and where the next Commonwealth Games will be held?

Pupils found out that Queen Elizabeth II is the head of the Commonwealth at present and towards the end of the day, pupils were able to start watching the special celebration service held in London. Can you remember any important people you spotted arriving at the service?
