  • Class 10's Assembly

    Thu 28 Oct 2021

Class 10 were so excited to share all of the learning they have been doing since starting in Year 2 with the rest of the school and grown ups.

They started by telling everyone what a castle was and the three different types of castles. Can you remember what they were called?

    M______ and B_____

    S_____

    C_________

Then the children shared what they had learnt about the different parts of a castle, bringing each piece together to make a big castle. Can you remember what the turrets were for?

Then the children shared some courtly dancing they had learnt. The King and Queen were very impressed.

A Jester then came to entertain the King and Queen making them laugh by juggling and being silly.

We talked about a famous local king we had been learning about. Can you remember his  name? King R________ III.

Finally the children ended the assembly by singing us a song 'The King is the castle.'

A big well done to all of Class 10 for a super assembly.

  • Year 2 - Virtual Synagogue Visit

    Wed 13 Oct 2021

What a fabulous opportunity Year 2 pupils had today – visiting Leicester Hebrew Congregation Synagogue, virtually!

This visit comes at the end of their RE unit of work – Who is Jewish and what do they believe? The children were able to showcase their vocabulary as they looked at some of the key features in the Synagogue (where the Rabbi sits, seats for the congregation, the Arc and Torahs, even the Mezuzahs in the doorways). They met Ginny who showed them some pictures of the outside of their synagogue, some items such as a Kippah & Tallit (prayer hat and prayer scarf), and talked to them further about the Torah scrolls and yad. Do you remember what the yad is used for? One group of children even met the Rabbi!

A fantastic question and answer time was had by all classes which helped to consolidate this term’s learning about Judaism. The children did a brilliant job at remembering the different aspects of Judaism and the festivals they celebrate. It’s true to say that they were all amazed to learn that the Torah scrolls are as long as a football pitch, when unrolled!

Thank you Year 2 for showing real interest and respect whilst visiting this Place of Worship. We are very proud of you. Thank you to all at the Leicester Hebrew Congregation Synagogue for giving a super virtual tour and talk.

Here are a few comments that the children made when I asked them about the experience:

“The Torah scroll is written in Hebrew and we even saw the yad. It’s a bit like a metal stick – so that they don’t mark or touch the scroll.”

“The Rabbi said hello to our group.”

“The lady showed us a Mezuzah which has a miniature scroll in it”

“They showed us the special candlestick – the Menorah.

“The Torah is actually five books not just one.”

“It took a year to write the Torah!”

“I learnt that the children have special places to sit upstairs in the Synagogue. The boys and girls sit separately,”

    “Shalom means peace.”

“I saw the Star of David – that’s the Jewish symbol you know.”

  • Boundary Farm Assembly - Autumn visit

    Tue 12 Oct 2021

The children enjoyed learning about our visit to Boundary Farm. They were interested in what happens at the farm in the autumn and especially loved hearing about the new calf.

Super listening and learning1 well done to those children who came on the visit and helped to present the information to Year 1 and 2, you were well spoken and very brave!

  • Hinckley Foodbank

    Wed 06 Oct 2021

On Tuesday 5-10-21 Julie from the Hinckley Foodbank visited our school and attended our whole school assembly to talk to all of us about the charity she works for.

We wanted to find out more about Hinckley Foodbank because your generous donations will be split equally between this charity and the Westfield branch of Age Concern.

On Thursday 7th October - Year 1 and 2 Harvest Festival - there will be a Harvest raffle, with food hampers as prizes. All proceeds of the raffle will be donated to the Westfield branch of Age Concern to help fund their special Christmas dinner at the Community Centre. The other half of your contributions, specifically long life products, will be donated to Hinckley Foodbank.

Julie started by asking us if we’d had breakfast this morning and explained very simply that there are many children in Hinckley who do not have breakfast because they have no food in their cupboards. We all agreed that we would feel hungry, tired and find it hard to concentrate at school. Sadly, there are many families that do not have enough money to buy food.

Julie showed us some examples of the long life food and supplies which included tinned goods, nappies, shower gel and deodorant that we could donate this Harvest time and that are donated throughout the year to many families who are in need.

She explained that the donations given to Hinckley Foodbank go into a big store and sit on shelves - just like you would see in a shop. There it is checked to make sure everything is in date. The items are bagged or boxed up and given away to individuals, couples or families so that everyone is fed and provided with what they need. Last year Hinckley Foodbank helped 5000 families which is absolutely amazing!

Julie was thankful to us for supporting our local community this year. We can’t wait to receive your long life donations and are grateful for your support. More details of what you could bring into school on Thursday can be found on the letter dated 22.9.21. Thank you for your generosity in advance.

  • Autumn visit to Boundary Farm

    Mon 04 Oct 2021

We had a fantastic trip to Boundary Farm today! Farmer Richard and Farmer Rachael showed us animals and crops at their dairy farm. We met a calf that was three hours old and saw cows being milked by a robotic milker! We learnt all about growing maize and pumpkins as well as making silage. The children were all very well behaved and extremely enthusiastic. What a fantastic experience!
