  • Class 8's Class Assembly

    Thu 18 Nov 2021

Today Class 8 shared their class assembly with Year 2 children and their adults from home.

It was a fantastic assembly about Children In Need to prepare for Children In Need day on Friday. Class 8 raised awareness of why Children In Need is an important cause and shared ideas of what they do to help. Some adults even helped out in the assembly by competing in a hula hoop competition!

Miss Robinson very proud of everyone in Class 8 for being part of a team and speaking so confidently. Well done Class 8!

  • Odd Socks Day!

    Tue 09 Nov 2021

Today we have been celebrating odd socks day! This has been a really fun start to anti bullying week. The theme this year is One Kind Word. We have enjoyed joining in with and dancing to the song by CBeebies star Andy Day and his band Andy and the Odd Socks!

We have loved looking at each other's odd socks and have realised that we can celebrate uniqueness whilst all being in the drive for kindness together.

Below is the anti-bullying alliance's call to action and we have been thinking about what this means and how we can put it in to action:

    - Ask if someone’s OK. Say you’re sorry. Just say hey.

    - In a world that can sometimes feel like it’s filled with negativity, one kind word can provide a moment of hope. It can be a turning point. It can change someone’s perspective. It can change their day. It can change the course of a conversation and break the cycle of bullying.

    - Best of all, one kind word leads to another. Kindness fuels kindness. So from the playground to Parliament, and from our phones to our homes, together, our actions can fire a chain reaction that powers positivity.

    - It starts with one kind word. It starts today.

During the afternoon we had our 'Friendship Afternoon' where we mixed with other classes within our year groups to create new friendships. We have enjoyed lots of different activities such as creating odd socks colourings, making friendships bracelets for others drawing kind hands and filling them with kind words, playing games, kindness jars....as well as completing classroom kindness pledges that we will display all year!

  • Westfield celebrate Diwali!

    Fri 05 Nov 2021

What a fun-packed week we have had learning about and celebrating Diwali - the Festival of Light!

Diwali is celebrated locally, nationally and globally by Hindus and some Sikhs. Celebrations have been ongoing this week and you may have heard fireworks last night (4th November) as this was the start of the New Year for many people. Many Hindus visit their place of worship called a Mandir to celebrate the festival.

Throughout the school we have shared the story of Diwali and its theme of light overcoming darkness, good overcoming evil. Can you remember the name of the characters in the Diwali story? If you ask us about the story, we can to tell you the key events as we have been retelling this with picture prompts and puppets.

In our RE lessons and topic lessons we enjoyed learning about what makes this time special to so many people and the reasons behind the specific ways of celebrating:

"Rangoli patterns are on the floors near their front doors to welcome people. They're bright and pretty coloured."

"Those lights are called divas to light the way. Rama and Sita found their way back home."

"Lakshmi is the name of the goddess."

Some children were even able to share their experiences and expertise with us which was fantastic!

"My mum has a special pen. It's henna and she made these patterns on my hands. It stays on for a bit then it washes off. It's called Mehndi."

Our creative activities ranged from making yummy chapatis, cards, Rangoli patterns, decorative diva lamps, Mehndi patterns, playing instruments (including the Dandiya dancing sticks) and even sampling poppadoms. We also enjoyed dressing in traditional dress and talked about fireworks a lot!

What did you enjoy most about learning about Diwali at school?

If you are celebrating Diwali this week - Happy Diwali to you and your family. We certainly enjoyed learning about this festival and how it is celebrated.

  • Class 11's Class Assembly

    Thu 04 Nov 2021

Today Class 11 shared their class assembly with the rest of the school and their adults from home.

It was a fantastic assembly about Diwali and the children showcased their reading, acting and PE skills.

Some children read an acrostic poem.

    Divas in windows

    Indian religion of Hinduism

    Welcoming Lakshmi into clean houses

    Always giving to others

    Lights everywhere

    Inviting Gods into colourful homes.

Then some children acted out the story of Rama and Sita. They listened to the story so well and remembered their parts too!

The facts read out by some other children was very interesting. Was there anything you did not know before?

Miss Ellis, Mrs Guest and Mrs Smith are all very proud of you for a great class assembly. Well done Class 11!

  • Year 2 Visit to Tamworth Castle

    Mon 01 Nov 2021

This week, the Year 2 children visited Tamworth Castle to support and extend their learning about our topic 'Dungeons and Dragons'. The children met the strict, well-dressed Lady of the castle and worked together to lay the table with plates, spoons and candlesticks for the Lord and Lady's meal.

Can you remember the metal that was used to make the plates?

What were some of the differences between the rich and poor people’s plates and cutlery?

The Lord and Lady were very surprised with some of the clothing the children (and the adults) were wearing so with some help, they were able to show us what appropriate clothing for girls and boys was like in the past.

The children then had to opportunity to see a knight's metal armour and put it together. Some children got to try on the knight’s helmet and found out it was very heavy! Then we all took part in knight training. How loud it was!

Why was shouting loudly in battle so important?

After a picnic lunch, a tour completed our trip to the castle. We explored many of the rooms throughout the castle and even sneaked a view from the battlements. Careful 'watchman' looking was essential to ensure no enemy was trying to invade Tamworth!

Can you remember the name of the room that we might call a 'bedroom' today?

The children had a fantastic time applying their learning and picking up so many new and interesting facts about castles from the past. Superb behaviour too!
