  • Author Visit

    Mon 28 Feb 2022

Today we were very lucky to have an author visit Westfield Infant School.

Can you remember what an author is?

Her name was Sophie Edgar. We welcomed Sophie to our school in a whole school assembly in the morning. Sophie told us all about when she first started writing books.

Can you remember how old she was when she wrote her first book?

Sophie also shared with us how she has become an author and what she had to do become a better writer.

She had to read lots of books and practise her writing all the time.

What does Sophie carry with her all the time to put her ideas into?

Sophie wrote her first published book last year which is called 'The day Mr Bumble came to stay'. Which is all about how a little girl called Lucy is afraid of bees, but by helping a poorly bee, she grew to like them.

Throughout the day Sophie did some workshops with each year group where we got to learn how to write our own story using 'Story storms', hear more stories and more how Sophie wrote her book.

Sophie set us a competition to write our own story! Mrs Hutchinson is going to be her judge and will choose three winners to receive a prize.

Your story needs to have a main character, an animal they are afraid of and a reason why at the end of the story they are not afraid any more. You can write your story on lots of pieces of paper, just one or even just do some illustrations. Give your stories to your class teacher so they can pass them onto Mrs Hutchinson.

    Happy writing and good luck!

A huge thank you to Sophie for visiting us this week. We all learnt so much about being an author and helping to inspire us to write our own stories.

  • Healthy School Week - Day 5

    Fri 11 Feb 2022

What a wonderful end to an amazing week!

The whole school assembly was so informative and it was so lovely to see how much learning has taken place this week. Can you see your class' work on the display in the hall?

Today is National 'Wear a Scarf Day'. We had an assembly in our classrooms to share. The acronym SCARF stands for 5 words; Safety, Caring, Achievement, Resilience and Friendship. The scarf is a representative of the way we should treat each other, the way we look after each other and the way we tackle our work.

The learning did not stop there!

In Reception the children had a great time in PE with Ben playing with the parachute.

In Year 2 the children had a visit from a Policeman! It was so interesting to meet him and we had lots of questions to ask him like ' Can you go through red lights?, How do you catch people? and How do you train?'. Mr Johnson told us different roles in the Police Force and the different transports they may use. Can you remember what you should do if you see a police car coming down the road?

  • Healthy School Week - Day 4

    Thu 10 Feb 2022

Another really fun day at Westfield Infant School!

In Reception the children have been learning about healthy foods and the importance of keeping our teeth clean. Can you tell your grownup how long we have to clean our teeth for? Check in your bookbag tonight for a half term challenge about teeth cleaning!

Another class have had the opportunity to enjoy a Relax Kids session with Miss Knight. Please ask your child about this lovely, calming experience.

In Year 2 the children have learnt about the Eatwell Plate. Can you tell your grownups how many pieces of fruit and vegetables you are recommended to eat every day?

In the afternoon all of the year 2 children have helped to make banana muffins. We worked co-operatively to read and follow the instructions. Can you remember what ingredients were needed to make the muffins? What is the order of the instructions?

We are looking forward to tomorrow's assembly to find out what each class has been learning about this year.

  • Healthy School Week - Day 3

    Wed 09 Feb 2022

What another fun day we have had today!

More children across the school have had the opportunity to meet with the Life Education Centre to talk about their feelings and emotions.

In Reception the children have been learning about nits and how to rid your hair of them. Ask your child what the best technique is.

Another class in Year 1 have had the experience of Relax Kids; as your child what their activity involved.

In Year 2 the children have learnt about how to respond to someone in an emergency and how to put somebody in the recovery position. Maybe they could show you? They have also roleplayed a visit to the dentist and learnt the names of different bones in the body.

Across the school we have also been looking at more ways to stay safe when using the internet. Can your child tell you ways to stay safe?

  • Healthy School Week - Day 2

    Tue 08 Feb 2022

We have had another great day of learning and fun today for our second day of Healthy School Week. Some classes have enjoyed a visit from the Life Education Centre and had a super experience talking about a healthy lifestyle, feelings, enjoying messages from Harold the Giraffe and even seeing inside our body!

Across the school we've been learning about the importance of washing our hands. Please ask your children when they should do this? We did a brilliant germ spreading demonstration using paint to represent the germs. As you can imagine the paint (germs) spread very quickly to lots of places!

We've been enjoying doing lots of different forms of exercise too including a heart racing work out and a calm and relaxing yoga session. We've continued to learn about other areas that contribute to a healthy lifestyle such as getting enough sleep and eating healthily too! There has been some fantastic cooking too including reception classes creating delicious pizzas.

Year 1 pupils will all have the opportunity over the week to take part in a Relax Kids session. They have learnt lots of techniques on how to manage their emotions. Please ask your children to show you what they have learnt.

Today is Safer Internet Day so the children have continued their learning with a special lesson on how to stay safe when using the internet too!

What a lot of things contribute to a healthy lifestyle! We are really proud of how the children are engaging with all the activities this week and we hope it will have long lasting effects on their physical and mental health!

  • Safer Internet Day 2022

    Tue 08 Feb 2022

Today we thought about how to stay safe online through the national 'Safer Internet Day' campaign. The aim of Safer Internet Day is to inspire a national conversation about using technology responsibly, respectfully, critically and creatively.

    This years theme is

'All fun and games - exploring relationships online'

We heard a story about Digiduck and the Magic Castle which focused on playing games online. The story helped us discuss themes within the book which included peer pressure, password sharing, and in-app purchasing.

(You can download your free version of the book here - https://www.childnet.com/resources/digiduck-stories/digiduck-and-the-magic-castle/)

We also talked in classes about how we all use the internet and what rules we already had in place at home!

We were impressed with how much the children knew about being safe online.

Throughout the rest of this week, children in Years 1 and 2 will learn with Hector about being safe online - they will watch ‘Hectors World’ and find out about what personal details are and when and who to share them with. They will also learn with Jessie and friends about what to do if we see something online that upsets us.

In EYFS they will learn with ‘Smartie the Penguin’ about being safe online and they will also meet ‘Jessie and Friends’ and talk about what we are watching online.

  • Healthy School Week - Day 1

    Mon 07 Feb 2022

We have had a fantastic start to Healthy School Week! Children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 have enjoyed a variety of activities such as; learning about the heart, brain and lungs in their body and how to keep them healthy, exercising, learning how to keep clean and healthy such as knowing what to do if we get head lice and knowing how to stay safe when using the internet.

This week is children's mental health week and so we have been learning that mental health is just as important as physical health in order to stay happy and healthy. We learnt some important lessons about talking to someone we trust if our emotions get big and heavy. We also learnt that's it's really important to say positive things about ourselves. We practised saying great things about ourselves such as 'I am calm', 'I am brilliant', 'I am energetic' and 'I am successful'. We learnt some techniques to calm us down if we feel very cross or frustrated. When our body and mind are calm the problem doesn't seem so bad and we can respond in a calm way so that everyone feels happier.

We are looking forward to learning more about being healthy tomorrow!

  • Healthy School Week - 7th - 11th February 2022

    Mon 07 Feb 2022

A week full of lots of fun and healthy activities

  • Let's celebrate Chinese New Year!

    Fri 04 Feb 2022

We have loved learning about a Worldview this week at Westfield - Chinese New Year! Celebrations started on Tuesday 1st February and for EYFS - they have continued all week! We have focused on the customs, traditions and culture of the people that celebrate this special time of year and globally and within our own community.

As a whole school we were treated to an assembly performance by Class 4 who shared with us the countries in the world that celebrate this new year festival. China, Singapore and Malaysia all prepare for the major celebrations by cleaning and tidying their homes and cooking traditional dishes. Class 4 shared with us the story of the Great Race in which the Jade Emperor suggested the animals should have a race to fairly determine which animal should be named after each year. Was the race a running race? Do you remember which animal won? Can you remember the other animals in the race? There were 12 animals in the race and so there are 12 animals in the Chinese Zodiac. Each new year depends on the new moon or lunar. Every year has a different animal named after it. Can you remember which animal year 2022 is?

We have enjoyed many rich experiences that have stimulated our learning and we have definitely learned more vocabulary along the way - Emperor, fortune... Our activities have included persevering with chopsticks, preparing and cooking a meal with noodles and vegetables, retelling the story of the Great Race, finding out which animal year we were born in, learning about ordinal numbers, writing numbers in Mandarin and writing our name using Chinese characters rather than letters from our alphabet.

We created lanterns, red money envelopes and dragon masks. We had a go at dancing in using the dragon and played drums to move to the beat. We also created our own fortune cookies, writing our own special positive messages in for the new year. We have all been saying Kung Hei Fat Choy. Can you remember what that means?
