  • Class 8 Assembly - Have you filled your bucket today?

    Thu 26 Oct 2017

Today Class 8 performed a fantastic assembly all about filling your buckets.  Not with water, but with good thoughts and good feelings.  They showed us how our actions can fill other peoples buckets and sang 2 songs all about it.

Well done Class 8!  You filled A LOT of buckets today!

  • Visit from Historian Dr Catherine Burke

    Tue 24 Oct 2017

We were delighted to welcome Dr Catherine Burke to Westfield Infant School today. Dr Burke has been researching for a project that is looking into the fact that 2017 is the 50th anniversary of The Plowden Report, Children and their Primary Schools. This document had a great deal of impact at the time.

As a result of her investigations Dr Burke found a document written by an American Educationalist; Joseph Featherstone who visited Westfield Infant School in 1967 and shared information about what was described at the time as a 'revolution in the English Education system'.

Contact from Dr Burke has sparked a lot of interest at school in looking at the Log Books written in the early days following the opening of the school and it soon became apparent that visitors from all over the world visited the school during the 1960's and 1970's.

Dr Burke had a tour of the school, taking a lot of photographs and she  had lunch with the School Council and 2 current members of staff who were pupils at the school.

She then spent time looking at the Log Books and photographs before meeting a group of ex members of staff, former pupils and Governors who enjoyed hearing about the research that is taking place. The group then looked at the Log Books and the photographs of Westfield Infant School from the early days up to the present.

Dr Burke is now going to work on a paper that will be discussed during an afternoon event in London in November. The amazing news is that Mr Featherstone will be travelling from America to attend the event and is looking forward to hearing from Dr Burke about her visit to Westfield Infant School.

It seems that Westfield Infant School was famous around the world during the 1960's and 1970's and that Brumas Bear is remembered by visitors who came to the school during those years. We made sure that Dr Burke took with her 2 of our much sought after Westfield Bears. One to keep herself to remember her visit and one to present to Mr Featherstone. If you are interested in the history of the school watch out for further information that will be shared when we receive it from Dr Burke.

  • Multi-Sports parent/carer event

    Fri 13 Oct 2017

It was very nice to see so many parents/carers turn up to join in with the Multi-Sports fun today. The children have learnt lots of different skills such as: Hand eye co-ordination; balance; speed and agility. The children have been able to use these skills during fun and active games.  They have even had the chance to create their own games, their favourite seems to be teachers!

It was a fantastic chance for the children to be able to showcase all that they have learnt during the past few weeks and play games such as base dodgeball with their adults.

Please take a look at the photos below.

  • The history of Westfield Infant School in the late 1960's!

    Fri 13 Oct 2017

Mrs MacLauchlan was recently contacted by Dr Catherine Burke who is a Reader in History of Education and Childhood. She sent Mrs MacLauchlan a document written in the late 1960's by Mr Joseph Featherstone an American Educationalist who visited Westfield Infant School and then wrote the paper.

When the school was first built it was very much considered to be a Flagship Early Years School and looking at the Log Books there were a number of visitors to the school both from different parts of the world and the country.

Dr Burke was pleased to find some history of the school on the website and she was also curious to know if Brumas the Bear is still here!

On Tuesday 24 October Dr Burke is visiting Westfield Infant School. She is interested in looking at any changes and to compare past with the present. She has been in contact with Mr Joseph Featherstone and is hoping to share her findings with him.

If you know anyone who was associated with the school during the 1950's and 1960's please share this information with them as

Dr Burke would love to meet them. If you are interested in meeting her and sharing any memories you have please come to the school on  Tuesday 24 October 2017 at 2.00 p.m. You will have the chance to meet Dr Burke, look at the report by Mr Featherstone, have a cup of tea and a treat and if you are interested we can arrange for you to look round the school.

We need your memories PLEASE whether you were a pupil, a member of staff or a parent!

  • Year 2 Models

    Thu 12 Oct 2017
On Thursday Mrs MacLauchlan went and looked at some of the Year 2 models in room 11.  They were amazing and it was like a trip around the world, from Big Ben to Japanese Sky Towers.  Everyone was very interested in hearing what models everyone had made and Mrs MacLauchlan gave out a lot of her special stickers.  Well done to everyone who made such fantastic models.
  • Boundary Farm Visit

    Wed 11 Oct 2017
Eight children from Year 1 were very lucky to visit Boundary Farm today. We learnt so much about the food that the farm produces. It is a dairy farm so mostly produces milk. They have 100 cows and produce 2000 litres of milk every day. We got the chance to pick sweetcorn and potatoes from the fields, feed the hens, visit the cows, see the pumpkins and learn all about the milking machines. All the children were very well behaved and extremely enthusiastic about their visit. They are looking forward to sharing information with their classes tomorrow and with the whole school in assembly after half term.
  • Castles - Year 2

    Tue 10 Oct 2017

What a wonderful climax to our topic 'Castles' this term.

Children in Year 2 ended their topic with a design technology afternoon creating their castles which they had deigned in a previous lesson.

Their castles began with making a drawbridge using a variety of technological skills including cutting, knot tying and hole punching.

Next the children added a variety of castle features that we had learned about this term. Most of the children worked independently to create their castles using a variety of resources they had requested in their planning.

Children tell a grown up all about your learning this term -

    • Talk to your grown ups about the castle defences on your model.
    • Talk about how castles were attacked
    • Talk about how castles have changed over time
    • Talk about the Knights and the armour they wore

    Parents/Carers

During Pupil Progress Evening  this week please take the time to look in our 'Class Topic Book' for more information about what and how your child has been learning about this term.

The children and the grown-ups also had fun outside in the Trim Trail searching for the fruits. Can you tell your grownups what fruit and vegetables you found?

Thank you to everyone who joined us this afternoon, we hope you had the chance to visit the harvest sale.

  • Harvest Assembly - Year 1 and 2

    Thu 05 Oct 2017

This morning the hall was full of children bringing gifts for the Harvest Assembly and the Harvest Table was soon looking very colourful.

Thank you to everyone who sent gifts in and thanks to those who have already purchased raffle tickets.

The Harvest Assembly was well attended by parents/carers of Year 1 and 2 pupils. We started the assembly by singing Big Red Combine Harvester which is a favourite and we were helped to remember the actions by a group of Year 2 pupils.

A group of Year 2 pupils then performed a play called The Cherokee People and we enjoyed seeing the children act it out as well as dancing and using musical instruments.

Both Year 1 and 2 then sang Five a day to remind us all about the importance of remembering to eat Five portions of fruit and vegetables every day.

This was followed by Year 1 reciting a poem which they had all been learning. The poem contained some very important messages and Year 1 did a brilliant job of keeping together.

Year 2 pupils read a prayer and the assembly ended with everyone singing Thank You God for the Harvest.

Volunteers are now helping to sort all the donated items and make up hampers and prizes for the raffle.

This afternoon the Reception Parents/Carers have been invited into the classes for Harvest Activities from 1.30 p.m. and we will be holding our Harvest Sale and Raffle to which everyone is invited. Tea, Coffee and cakes will also be available. The sale will start at 2.30 p.m. and the raffle will be drawn between 3.15 - 3.30 p.m. (we need to try and sell all the produce first). Raffle tickets will be available during the Harvest Sale.

All the money raised will provide a lovely Christmas Meal for members of Westfield Branch of Age Concern and will also help to fund the special transport some of the members need to get to the Community Centre. On the day of the meal Year 2 will be going over to the Community Centre to sing to the members.
