  • Year 1 - Castle Making Day

    Thu 31 Oct 2013
Year 1 had a fantastic day on Thursday making castles with Mr Smith. We even made a working drawbridge which opened and closed!
Thank you to all the grown ups that came and helped us with the castles, don't worry if you were unable to make it as there will be things to do with castles in the children's 'My Star Book' this week to work on at home.
The adults in Year 1 would like to say a huge well done to the children for being so well behaved and sensible on our very busy DT day!

  • Musical Visitors

    Wed 30 Oct 2013

Today we had some visitors from John Cleveland College, who all play in the John Cleveland College Jazz Band. They brought in with them some instruments and played some amazing music for us to listen to.  The instruments were an electric guitar, played by Owen, a keyboard played by Glenn and a trumpet played by Tom.

All the children and staff loved to listen to them play, and we particularly liked it when they played the theme tune from the Pirates of the Caribbean film, so much that they gave us an encore!

  • Year 2 - Castle Making Day

    Tue 29 Oct 2013
What a fantastic day we had making our castles. Mr Smith told us all about castles and showed us some amazing techniques for us to build our own. In the afternoon lots of parent/carers came to join their children just in time to make the drawbridge. Lots of tricky sawing and building...they did a fantastic job!

What a treat today in assembly!  Miss Stevenson introduced the Year 2 Bollywood Dancing club, who performed an amazing dance - well done everyone!  Then Mrs Parkes introduced the choir for their first public performance.  They sang a harvest song called Harvest Thanks, which was fantastic.  What a great end to the first half term!
  • Year 1 Playground Making

    Fri 18 Oct 2013

Today in our DT lesson we designed and made playgrounds.  We thought about all the different equipment that you find in playgrounds and looked at different materials we could use to make our fantastic models.

    Everyone enjoyed making them!

  • Book Morning

    Thu 17 Oct 2013

This morning parents/carers had the opportunity to come into school and read books with the children, visit the Jolly Roger Book Sale and then stay for a Letters and Sounds lesson. As you can see from the photographs all the classes had a lot of visitors and a number of parents/carers learnt a lot from joining in with the lesson.

Many thanks to all those parents/carers who supported the book sale. As a result of the books you purchased we now have a lovely selection of new books in the library.

  • Class 5 Assembly

    Thu 10 Oct 2013

On Thursday, Class 5 did a fantastic assembly that helped the whole school with their makaton signing.

All the teaching staff were on the 'big screen' and Class 5 reminded us all how to sign their names so we all know what to do in assembly.

They then sang a selection of songs and showed us how to sign them and showed the school that it is possible to sign and sing at the same time - their singing was amazing!  Well done Class 5.

  • Mount Road Baptist Church Bible Exhibition 2013

    Tue 08 Oct 2013

What a treat for all the pupils at Westfield Infant School today! Each Year Group took it in turns to visit a fantastic Bible Exhibition led by Jem Hudson and a team from Mount Road Baptist Church. Pupils were given an interesting snapshot into the life of Jesus as they heard stories and looked at beautiful illustrations. Pupils loved meeting different characters from the Bible including Mary - Jesus' mother, Zaachaeus and Luke and listened attentively as they recounted events. Each Year Group was then split into 3 groups and had the opportunity to dress up in clothes from Bible times, taste exotic fruits from the Middle East and take part in a quiz to check who was listening! It was a real encouragement to hear pupils share their own knowledge by answering questions, drawing on what they have learnt at School.

A massive 'Thank You' to all involved; a fabulous way to support our RE Curriculum - the pupils and staff thoroughly enjoyed it!

  • Class 6 Assembly - Water

    Thu 03 Oct 2013

Well done Class 6 and pupils from Class 7 for extending our knowledge of Water this afternoon.  Following on from the Year 1 'Water' theme in Harvest earlier in the week, pupils displayed their love of water through song, dance, music and poetry.

Excellent whole class singing of 'Wet, Wet, Wet' and 'Sing a Rainbow' complete with Makaton singing.  Mrs Leeson explained how precious Water is around the world and how some countries including India and Africa have very little rainfall.  One pupil demonstrated how some children walk for miles to pump clean water into a container before carrying it back on top of their heads to their families in villages.  Staff, pupils and parents/carers were also treated to a tribal rain dance accompanied by pupils playing percussion instruments...I wonder if that's the reason why it rained all afternoon?!

We were also reminded about our responsibilities at home and at school - saving water by turning those taps off properly...Remember those Eco-Warriors are always on the look at around our school! Well done to those pupils who read the Acrostic poem so clearly. Finally a fun umbrella and wellies dance was choreographed to 'Singing in the Rain'.  A fantastic end to a busy week with an International theme. Special thanks to Mrs Bailey, Mrs Moore and Miss Hussey!

  • A VIP Visit to County Hall

    Wed 02 Oct 2013

Mrs Leeson and Mrs Fox accompanied Sister Rose and Santhi to Leicestershire County Council this morning to meet Helen Trilling, International Links Co-ordinator and Mrs Rosita Page, the Chairman.

Mrs Page gave us an insight into the structure of County Hall and explained how she came to be Chairman and the role she has within Leicestershire.  It was all very interesting and we were given a tour of the impressive Council Chamber where every decision is made.  Sister Rose and Santhi were presented with a Leicestershire Fox pin and the significance of it explained.
