  • Odd Socks Day

    Tue 15 Nov 2022

Today we have celebrated odd socks day by wearing our odd socks to school! Most importantly, Odd Socks Day is designed to be fun! It’s an opportunity to encourage people to express themselves and celebrate their individuality and what makes us all unique!

There’s a serious message behind the fun: pull on odd socks to show we’re ALL unique and different, and let’s be kind to each other and respect each other’s individuality. We also noticed so many things that are the same about us and know that we are all in this school together and have a responsibility to take of each other.

We celebrated friendships at school with a 'friendship afternoon'. Children visited a different class this afternoon and played with children from reception, Year 1 and Year 2. They all had lots of fun but understand the message behind the fun...

It is antibullying week and this year's theme is REACH OUT. We talked about bullying being a repeated behaviour that is on purpose and it hurts someone physically or emotionally. We have taught the children to STOP bullying (S start T telling O other P people). The children know that all adults at school are here to listen to them and support them and will help them if they have a problem.

During friendship afternoon we practised REACHING OUT to new friends by asking if they are ok, asking if they are happy and if we can help them.

We all had a fantastic, fun afternoon!

  • Westfield Remembers...

    Fri 11 Nov 2022

This week we have been thinking about one of our school values in particular - Respect. We have been learning about the significance of the poppy and many of us have worn them throughout the week to show respect to the many, many soldiers who lost their lives in World War I and World War 2. We also thought about others who had given their lives and those in the Army today helping others in need.

Remembrance Day, sometimes known as Armistice Day is always on the 11th November. This is because the First World War ended at 11 o'clock on the 11th November 1918.

On Friday morning we held a very special assembly of Remembrance as a whole school. We all wore our poppies and sat so sensibly as each International Council class representative handed Mr Squires their class wreath. These were displayed on our Cenotaph. At 11 o'clock we held a two-minute silence, an opportunity to be quiet and reflect on the brave acts of those so that we can live in freedom today. Thank you to all of you for showing respect.

Can you remember why poppies are the symbol of Remembrance?

  • Class 10 Assembly

    Thu 10 Nov 2022

What a fantastic assembly you performed today Class 10!

Everyone who took part did brilliant speaking, acting and of course the singing!

It was a great way to teach the rest of the school (and Miss Ellis!) how to be respectful.

You all used great loud voices and spoke very clearly so everyone at the back could here too.

You should all be very proud of yourselves on this performance.

  • Class 9 Assembly

    Thu 03 Nov 2022

What an excellent class assembly Class 9 presented to the rest of the school. Just like Mr Squires said, it was brilliant to have a mini History lesson as well as bonfire safety.

Class 9 taught everyone about why we celebrate Bonfire Night because of Guy Fawkes and his men trying to blow up the Houses of Parliament and King James I. Fortunately they were caught in time and Parliament was saved. What an interesting fact we learnt that the explosion would have travelled 500m!

The second part of Class 9's assembly was all about bonfire safety during bonfire night. They told us 3 important safety rules.

    stay behind the safety rope

2 Put sparklers in a bucket of water

Only let adults light the fireworks

We are so proud of Class 9 with their reading and acting during the performance.

We hope everyone has a wonderful bonfire night and hope that you all stay safe.

  • Andy Tooze visits Westfield for the day!

    Wed 02 Nov 2022

What an exciting day we have had with our special guest Andy Tooze. Andy is a poet which means that he writes poems. He was invited to Westfield Infant School with a view to excite and engage the children in poetry…

Andy kick-started the day with a whole school assembly, inspiring us from the start by getting us up and on our feet to participate in one of his action poems. He taught us that poems are easy and poems are fun! Andy shared that he’s an author because he has written poetry books – he brought three along today AND with a little help from us, performed ‘Baby in a buggy.’ He shared his little notebook with us which was full of crossing out which showed how his ideas change as he writes poems and he reminded us that this is what good writers do! Another of his poems called ‘That Room’ – a very funny poem all about toilets – proved very popular with many of us (including the teachers!) Andy also showed us a library card and promoted our local library where you can borrow and enjoy books for free!

During the morning, Andy enjoyed working alongside the Year 2 children developing ideas and writing their own animal poems. The poems that you all produced were superb children. Andy was really impressed with the fun you had with rhyming and language. Year 1 children worked with Andy in the afternoon and each class composed a poem based on their topic All Around the World. Each class practised a different poem written by Andy.

At the end of the day, the whole school met together again in the hall for a special round up assembly. A chance to share and celebrate a wonderful day of hard work and fun! Andy selected a ‘quality quartet’ from each Year 2 class to represent what they’d been up to. Wow! These children read their animal poems out beautifully in an audible voice to the whole school. What a delight to see your confidence! In turn, each Y1 and Y2 class stood to recite and perform different action poems written by Andy:

    Class 10 – Fire Bell

    Class 9 – Class Rules

Class 8 – Ten Tired Tomatoes

    Class 6 – Fit Club

    Class 5 – Sledging

    Class 4 – Disco Bus

Classes 1, 2 and 3 debuted three poems which they have learnt from their Poetry Basket called Chop Chop, Pointed Hat and Falling Leaves. What a treat you gave us – everyone was joining in and you even had actions! Everyone was very impressed including Andy and Mr Squires!

A fabulous day ended with opportunity of buying one or more of Andy’s books to read for ourselves. He even signed them for us. Huge thanks to Andy for spending the day with us and for enthusing our children all day long!

If you’ve been inspired today to read more poetry and to write poems – go for it! What’s stopping you…?
