As you can see from the photographs Family Learning Morning was very well supported by Westfield families. A lot of families also enjoyed having breakfast at school as a treat. Thank you to everyone who came and a big thank you to all the staff who gave time up at the weekend to support the event.
Those families who came were able to enjoy a wide range of activities and hopefully it gave adults some ideas about things that you can do at home that will extend your child's learning.
For those children who completed their passport and posted it in the Post Box you will have the opportunity to win one of the prizes. Adults can also complete the Evaluation Form which, if returned will be entered into the draw.
For those families unable to come we will be sending some information home. If you complete the form and return it by Thursday you will also be entered into a draw as we are keen to find out what we can do to get even more families at this annual event. Prizes will be awarded during assembly on Friday.
Class 10 were so excited to share all of the learning they have been doing since starting in Year 2 with the rest of the school and grown ups.
They started by telling everyone what a castle was and the three different types of castles. Can you remember what they were called?
M______ and B_____
S_____
C_________
Then the children shared what they had learnt about the different parts of a castle, bringing each piece together to make a big castle. Can you remember what the turrets were for?
Then the children shared some courtly dancing they had learnt. The King and Queen were very impressed.
A Jester then came to entertain the King and Queen making them laugh by juggling and being silly.
We talked about what we had learnt on our trip to Tamworth Castle and how we met the Lady of the house. We learnt how to speak properly to her. Some servants showed us this by always doing a bow and curtsey. Do you remember what the servants had to say to the Lady?
Some knights then showed us how the knights prepare for battle.
Finally the children ended the assembly by singing us a song 'The King is the castle.'
A big well done to all of Class 10 for a super assembly.
Some Year 2 children had a lovely afternoon cooking as part of the Family Learning Programme.
The food smelled wonderful! If you would like to try and make this at home there is a copy of the recipe below
As you all know, Westfield Infant School recently was awarded the Food For Life Gold Award. We were asked to be part of a film called ‘Food the future of medicine,’ . The film was created in partnership with the College of Medicine and ITN productions.
We hope you enjoy watching the fantastic effort made by all the pupils and staff involved.
This week, Year 2 children visited Tamworth Castle to support and extend their learning about castles. The children met the strict, well-dressed lady of the castle and were able to help the servants lay the table with plates, spoons and candlesticks for the evening meal.
Can you remember the metal that was used to make the plates?
What were some of the differences between the rich and poor peoples plates and cutlery?
The Lady was very surprised with some of the clothing the children (and the adults) were wearing so with some help, she was able to show us what appropriate clothing for girls and boys was like in the past.
After using our recent learning of knights and arranging the heavy, metal armour we all took part in knight training. How loud it was!
Why was shouting loudly in battle so important?
After a picnic lunch, a tour completed our trip to the castle. We explored many of the rooms throughout the castle and even sneaked a view from the top of the tower. Careful 'watchman' looking was essential to ensure no enemy was trying to invade Tamworth!
Can you remember the name of the room that we might call a 'bedroom' today?
The children had a fantastic time applying their learning and picking up so many new and interesting facts about castles from the past. Superb behaviour too!
Back at school, Year 2 children learned about dragons, using art and D&T skills and learnt a poem to recite.
What was the name of the patron saint who bravely slayed a fierce, angry dragon?
What an exciting few days we have had! Well done children.
Year 1 have spent the day learning about how to lead a healthy lifestyle! All the children had a lot of information they could share and impressed the team that came in to work with them.
The sessions focused on four important parts of a healthy lifestyle; eat well, drink well, move well and sleep well. The children were able to show what a healthy plate of food would look like and why it is healthy. They also explained about healthy drinks and how many cups of water we must try to drink a day...
Can you remember how many cups of water we should be drinking a day?
Please have a look at the photos below to see how we got on.
