Class 10 had the chance to share their learning with the school community this afternoon. After a very busy topic, learning about castles, the children enthusiastically taught us some of the important lessons they learned from their trip to Tamworth Castle. This included how to hold a sword and a bill hook.
Can you remember what a ‘girl’s bow’ was called?
The children had worked hard as a class to create a new dragon adventure story. Georgina the dragon had been worked very hard looking after all the people from the castle. She decided to give herself a well-earned rest, but can you remember which country she flew to? On her return, Georgina terrified the enemy and was able to protect the castle once again.
As a school, we all finished the assembly with a super rendition of ‘Shake Your Sillies Out’.
Well done Class 10 for a great assembly!
This afternoon some of the children from Year 1 and 2 went on a trip to Boundary Farm in Sapcote.
The trip is part of the work we are doing to help us achieve our Gold, Food For Life award.
The farmers, Richard and Rachel, showed the children around the farm and explained how they look after the animals.
The children were able to collect eggs and also bring a pumpkin back to school.
The children will now do an assembly so that they can tell the rest of the school what they have learnt.
A big 'Thank You' goes to Richard and Rachel for giving up their time to spend with us. We had a very fun and informative afternoon!
The Westfield family continues to grow with the addition of Mia Naomi Leeson. She was born this morning, 24th October, at 5.59am and weighed 8lb. 2oz. Mr and Mrs Leeson are over the moon with the safe delivery of another daughter. We all look forward to a visit and a cuddle soon.
This morning we held our Harvest Assembly for Year 1 and 2 pupils. We were joined by a lot of visitors including representatives from the Westfield Branch of Age Concern.
As you can see from the photographs the children came to school with a wonderful selection of fresh fruit and vegetables, tins, packets and other donations. The harvest display soon filled up and looked very colourful.
The assembly started with Year 2 telling everyone about the Send a Cow charity. We also saw some photographs of how this charity works. Every class had collected coins in a bottle and all this money will be used to help the Send a Cow charity to provide a family with a cow which will help them in many different ways.
The whole school sang the Fair Trade Song and this was followed by a play performed by year 2 based on the Handa's Surprise story. This included a dance and some musicians who played the drums. We then sang the song called Five a Day.
Year 1 then recited a poem which was followed by the first performance this year by the school choir. The choir sang a Harvest Song and did very well because they had needed to learn a lot of words!
A group of Year 1 pupils then took the lead in a Harvest Prayer and the assembly ended with everyone singing the Harvest Hymn Give Thanks for the Harvest.
A group of WISA members then sorted all the harvest produce ready for the sale that will take place this afternoon. Thank you to all parents/carers and friends of the school for your support. We look forward to seeing you at the Harvest Sale and raffle this afternoon!
This week, Year 2 children visited Tamworth Castle to support and extend their learning about castles. The children met the strict, well-dressed lady of the castle and were able to help the servants lay the table with plates, spoons and candlesticks for the evening meal.
Can you remember the metal that was used to make the plates?
What were some of the differences between the rich and poor peoples plates and cutlery?
The Lady was very surprised with some of the clothing the children (and the adults) were wearing so with some help, she was able to show us what appropriate clothing for girls and boys was like in the past.
After using our recent learning of knights and arranging the heavy, metal armour we all took part in knight training. How loud it was!
Why was shouting loudly in battle so important?
After a picnic lunch, a tour completed our trip to the castle. We explored many of the rooms throughout the castle and even sneaked a view from the top of the tower. Careful 'watchman' looking was essential to ensure no enemy was trying to invade Tamworth!
Can you remember the name of the room that we might call a 'bedroom' today?
The children had a fantastic time applying their learning and picking up so many new and interesting facts about castles from the past. Superb behaviour too!
Back at school, Year 2 children enjoyed a picnic lunch in the tipi and learned about dragons, using art and D&T skills.
What was the name of the patron saint who bravely slayed a fierce, angry dragon?
What an exciting few days we have had! Well done children.
The Year 1 pupils were very excited today because a lot of them had visitors coming to school at lunchtime to have a Family Roast Dinner with them!
The Catering Staff were working very hard all morning preparing the food and as you can see from the photographs everyone had a delicious meal. The visiting grown ups were very excited to be able to use the Times Table Plates so there was also a lot of mathematical discussion whilst everyone was eating!
As the meal was roast pork everyone was offered some very special apple sauce to go with it! The apples were from our school garden, picked by the children who also helped to prepare the apple sauce.
Thank you to all the parents/carers who joined their children for lunch. If you would like to make a comment about your experience don't forget you can use Guestbook! We would love to hear from you.
Today was a great treat because all Westfield Infant School families had the opportunity to come to school on a Saturday! The staff got to school early to get everything prepared and Mr and Mrs Fox were up early getting the refreshments ready.
There were lots of activities for adults and children to do together:
Mark Making and Handwriting Skills
Family Fun Playing Games
Storytelling and Creating Stories
Number Skittles
Bugclub, Busythings and Focus on Phonics
Shopping Activity
Making a Fruit Kebab using a repeating pattern
Maths Hunt
Problem Solving
As you can see from the photographs everyone had a great time and went home with lots of new ideas about activities to do at home to extend learning as well as having lots of fun!
Thank you to everyone who came and a BIG thank you to all the staff and governors who supported the event.
