  • Summer Fayre

    Fri 28 Jun 2019

We had fantastic weather for the Westfield Summer Fayre this year. It was great to be able to set up outside with the knowledge that there was no sign of rain! The total raised during the evening will be over £2,800 which is a wonderful effort!

As you can see from the photographs everyone had a wonderful time and it was the perfect opportunity for the whole Westfield Community to join together and have some fun!

A special mention to the Year 2 Country Dancers who performed so well on such a hot evening! You were all fantastic! Thank you to Miss Johnson who helped them to learn the dances and Mrs Woodley who once again sorted out the costumes.

Thank you to everyone who helped in anyway to make the evening such a success. The next WISA meeting will take place on:

Tuesday 9 July 2019 at 2.15 p.m. A final total will be available at the meeting and a break down of the amount taken on each stall.

  • Year 2 Pirate Assembly

    Thu 27 Jun 2019

This Morning we all watched Year 2's Year Group assembly which was all about their Summer Term Topic PIRATES! All of Year 2 were dressed as Pirates and really looked the part.

The assembly included lots of songs, pirate facts and learning all about the features of the seaside.

Can you remember the name of the famous pirate they had been learning about?

    B_________________

The children have LOVED our Pirate topic and were keen to share some of their learning and all about our pirate trip we went on last week.

Well done to all the Year 2 children!

    Arrrrrrrrr!

  • Year 2 Pirate Day Trip

    Thu 20 Jun 2019

Today Year 2 pupils had a fantastic day packed full of adventures on their quest to be officially recognised as pirates worthy to sail to seven seas!

Arriving at Beaumanor, children met the three captains who had created plenty of challenges to keep the children busy and build on some of the exciting learning during our Topic lessons back at school.

Children had to use riddles to locate hidden maps indicating where the treasure would be found. We then went down into the dark cavern. It was amazing to see so much pirate treasure and we even got to taste a pirate's staple food, old stale biscuits. Thankfully these biscuits did not contain any insect.

Can you remember the added ingredient in the biscuits that was once thought to be very precious by pirates?

Can you remember the name of the animal that would be found in these pirate biscuits?

Children also had to complete a grog challenge in teams. Using vessels of varying sizes, pupils carefully transported the grog across an adventure playground trying not to spill any of the grog! Children showed amazing self-control and persevered across a challenging course!

Share with your adults at home the surprising ending to this challenge (a raincoat may have been helpful!)

All pirates should have excellent accuracy, especially if they're in charge of firing the cannons so aiming practice was essential to our pirate training. Some children showed great ambition and aimed for the more challenging targets further from the ship!

Can you remember the target you needed to hit to score a spectacular 50 points?

The children agreed that burying treasure needed a good memory to avoid forgetting where it was! Working cooperatively, the children complete a pirate-themed pairs game and earned precious treasure for each pair matched.

Our final challenge called on children to use their super maths skills to complete a missing number game. Children worked well to solve word problems, using their mental and written strategies to fill in the boxes.

Could you write your own pirate-themed word problem and share it with your class?

We had a thoroughly enjoyable day and are pleased to announce that all children passed their training and are now recognised as daring and fierce pirates! Well done to all children.

  • EYFS Family Roast DInner

    Thu 20 Jun 2019

What a fantastic lunchtime it was today!

Class 1, 2, 3 and EYFS Class 7 had their Parent/Carer Roast Dinner. It was an excellent turnout seeing so many grownups enjoying their meal with their children.

The children were able to show how we line up, collect our lunch and pudding and tidy up after ourselves. They also showed their grownups how sensibly they eat their lunch with a knife and fork.

Year 1 also had an exciting lunchtime today as they enjoyed a picnic on the patio!

Well done to all the children for their fantastic behaviour and a big thank you to everyone who joined us.

  • Boundary Farm Summer Visit

    Wed 19 Jun 2019

Today we had a fantastic time at Boundary Farm for our summer visit. Once again Farmer Richard met us from the bus and gave us a warm welcome. He shared so much information with us as he took us on a guided tour around the farm.

We visited the sheep barn where we saw sheep that had just had their fleece removed. This is an important job in the summer. Can you think why the sheep have their coat removed at this time of year? We felt the wool which was furry but also greasy. The grease makes the sheep's wool waterproof which is very useful to keep the sheep dry when it rains.

We visited some calves that were only 3 days old. They were very small but the children were amazed that they had already learnt to walk, it only takes them 10 minutes after they are born to learn to walk!

Next we walked through deep, sticky, slippery mud to the fields where oats are grown. They aren't ready to harvest yet but in about 6 weeks the crop will be yellow and dried out and that's when it can be used to make oats and straw. Can you think of how the oats and the straw may be used?

As well as visiting the sheep in the field and the chickens the children all got to climb aboard a tractor! Each child who visited got to take an egg home from the farm and Farmer Richard and Farmer Rachael kindly gave us a farming magazine for each child at school!

We are extremely grateful for another fantastic experience and for our children once again being very well behaved. I know the children are looking forward to sharing all they have learnt in a Boundary Farm Assembly.

  • Water Safety Assembly

    Tue 18 Jun 2019

This morning was a little bit different as we all went into the hall for an assembly which we don't usually do on a Tuesday!

A lady called Maureen came in to speak to us all about something very important - Water Safety!

Maureen told us all about the different types of water and that we should always be SAFE and Stand Away From the Edge when we are near any water!

We then looked at a poster and we had to spot the things that people were doing wrong and put a sad face on it.

Can you remember some of the things people were doing wrong when they were by the water?

Luckily it wasn't all bad as we spotted some people doing the right thing too.

Can you remember some of the things people were doing right when they were by the water?

Maureen when onto show us how to safely throw different objects to people who are stuck in water. This included not just a buoyancy ring but we also found out you can use a ball or even an empty water bottle.

The Assembly was very informative and all the children learnt lots of very important information. Thank you to Maureen for coming in and speaking to us all!

  • Outdoor Adventures Year 1

    Tue 18 Jun 2019
Last night Year 1 parents and carers had two sessions of outdoor adventures in the school grounds. It even managed to stop raining for a minute! It involved circus skills in the hall where we saw some budding tight rope walkers. On the patio they were improving their ball skills. Finally in the trim trail there was den building. Miss Hamilton and Mr James tested the waterproofing of these by throwing buckets of water over them. Sorry to anyone who got soaked but it was great fun! The evening ended with a hot dog and a drink . Thank you to all that helped and attended.
  • Sports Morning

    Mon 17 Jun 2019

The weather was kind to us today and we all enjoyed a fabulous Sports Morning.

We began our Sports Morning with our EYFS pupils - all the children took part in either running or obstacle races being cheered on by family and friends.

They were followed by Year 1 races that included running, dressing up, hurdles and sack races, and finally the Year 2 children took part in running, hurdles, relay, sack races, bouncy hopper races and ladder races!

To end our sports morning we all enjoyed watching the toddlers compete in a running race and the parents/carers getting into the spirit of the obstacle course!

Everyone who took part showed great resilience, perseverance and confidence.

A big thank you to all the family and friends that came to support our event and cheer on the children

  • Year 2 Family Learning trip to Green Towers

    Fri 14 Jun 2019

Some Year 2 children and their parents went  to Green Towers today to take part in some very exciting activities. We started the morning with some parachute games and a very energetic game of horses and knights where the horses were the grown ups!. Then we went into our groups. The first group were learning circus skills such as juggling, tight rope walking, hoola hooping. It was great fun. The second group took part in a variety of team building events that involved good listening and co-operation skills. Finally the third group found out how to be safe around dogs and  also played a game. At the end of the day we all came back together and Mr Burrows demonstrated some very interesting acrobatics that the children could do with their grown ups. This was very tricky and gave us some real heart stopping moments...but thankfully everybody was fine. Thank you to all the children that behaved brilliantly and the adults that came to support them. A good time was had by all.

  • Year 2 Burbage Common Trip

    Fri 14 Jun 2019

This morning some of the Year 2's went to visit Burbage common!

We were met by Mrs Ratcliffe who had set up camp for us and even lit a fire. We split into three groups to do some different activities.

One activity was making nature pictures! The children were so creative and came up with some lovely designs and ideas. Have a look at the pictures and see if you can work out what the pictures are. Can you spot the picture that looks like a face? It even has eyelashes!

Another activity was den building using lots of sticks and material to make a shelter which came in very handy! The children worked really well together as a team to build some great dens. Can you spot some children hiding in them on the photos?

The last activity was with Mrs Ratcliffe. We had a fantastic time cooking in the forest. Children had the opportunity to make tasty donuts using very simple ingredients and adding savoury flavours. We also made two types of fritters. After foraging around Burbage Common for elderflowers, we washed them in clean water and dipped them into a batter made from flour, water and a pinch of salt. For nettle fritters, we had to wilt the nettles on the fire so they didn’t sting us before coating them in the batter. Finally we had to cook them on the fire in a pan of oil. We knew they were ready because they changed colour. After sprinkling a little sugar over them, we got to enjoy our cooking. They all tasted delicious!

Back at school in the afternoon we all enjoyed a picnic on the playground as the sun finally came out! Then we enjoyed playing some games, building some lego models and taking part in some team sports.

We all had a fantastic time despite the wet weather! Well done to all pupils for excellent behaviour.
