  • Neovia Eco-Warrior Awards 2014

    Thu 19 Jun 2014

Some children from the Year 2 Eco-Warriors went to the Caterpillar site in Desford for the 6th annual Neovia Eco Awards. We presented to some other schools about what we did as Eco-Warriors at Westfield Infant School.
The children then got to see some Caterpillar machinery, complete a fire safety quiz and met Dave, a man who has lived in different rainforests.

Everyone behaved wonderfully and had a fantastic day out! The children also received a goodie bag of treats to take home.

Well done everyone! You have made both myself and Mrs Singleton very proud!

  • Classes 4 and 7 Wharf Trip

    Wed 18 Jun 2014

Wow ! It was class 4 and class 7's turn for a trip down to the Wharf and all the children were very excited.

The weather was perfect as was the children's behavior. Our day started off with a gentle walk down to the Wharf which we all enjoyed. When we got down there Mr Burrows told us all about the exciting and very interesting history of the building that surround the Wharf. He told us about the old prisons underneath the ground and how the bad people used to get taken a very long way away...all the way to Australia! Which had some off us thinking about Mrs England's trip to Australia. Surely Mrs England didn't go to Australia because she was naughty ?! Class 4 will have to investigate further.

Mr Maksymiw had split us into 3 groups. Each group had a chance to walk to the Marina and have a nosy round. We even went onto a real narrow boat! Another exciting activity was an alphabetical eye spy back at the Wharf, we all did very well at this. We also had a chance to do an observational drawing of a narrow boat.
Mr Burrows took groups out on one of his boats and they paddled up and down the canal discussing what they could see and learning more about the history and uses of canals.

All in all a fantastic day was had by all. A big well done to class 4 and class 7 for their super behavior and a very big thank you to all the adults that were involved.

Please take a look through our pictures!

  • Classes 6 and 7 Wharf Trip

    Tue 17 Jun 2014
"We're going on the Wharf Trip - We're going to have a fun time - What a beautiful day - We'll learn SO much!"
Before we left Classes 6 and 7 recalled the SAFE rule to remind us how to keep safe near water - Stay Away From the Edge! A fun-packed day with a variety of stimulating activities that engrossed all pupils including paddling on a bell boat, making observational drawings of the narrow boats, using binoculars to spot wildlife and nature, walking all the way to the Marina to investigate the names of narrow boats and ACTUALLY walk through one. At lunchtime Mr Burrows set us a hula hoop challenge which encouraged staff and pupils to problem solve! Take a look at the photos below to see just how much fun we had!
A MASSIVE 'THANK YOU' to all pupils who were absolutely fantastically behaved - it was a delight to take you! Thank you also to all staff for your help and to all parents/carers of Class 6 and 7 pupils.

  • Year 1 Fathers Day/Male Carers Celebration

    Fri 13 Jun 2014
We had a brilliant time on Friday in both the afternoon and the evening session. There were three activities. First there was den building for an animal and then for two grownups. After that the children guided the grown up through the 'blind trail' the latest addition to our wonderful sensory garden. Finally we got to whittle a stick in preparation for cooking a sausage over an open fire, complete with tomato ketchup! All the activities were great fun but it got even better when we tested the dens to see if they were waterproof...some very wet children and dads! Thank you to Mrs Huddlestone who came along as official photographer even though it was her birthday. Look out for similar events and please do come along, we look forward to seeing you next time.
  • Reception Fathers Day/Male Carers Celebration

    Fri 13 Jun 2014
Thank you to all the grown-ups who joined us on Friday for a wonderful afternoon. The children thoroughly enjoyed spending time making superheros and masks, building lego models, playing on the bikes and sharing their outdoor classroom. We were lucky to have fantastic weather and we even had ice lollies together at the end of the afternoon. We had lots of fun together.
  • Class 7 Gruffalo Trip

    Thu 12 Jun 2014
Class 7 had a lovely day in the sunshine at Beaumanor Hall. Everyone was busy all day with exciting activities about The Gruffalo story. We looked for the animals in the woods and were able to explore the fantastic old trees and stream. Back at school we have listened to the story and worked hard talking, drawing and writing about the story and our trip. It was good to have so many parents on the trip with us and hope you had an enjoyable day too!
  • Year 2 Fathers Day/Male Carers Celebration Burbage Common

    Tue 10 Jun 2014

What a great day some of the Year 2 children had today at Burbage Common with their Fathers/Male Carers.

As you can see from the photographs there were lots of different activities to do and everyone behaved beautifully.

When we first arrived Steve Burrows gave a safety talk and explained we would be building shelters. We were split into 3 groups and given the same amount of resources each. As you can see all the shelters turned out very differently. Throughout the day each group got to experience pond dipping with Mrs Ratcliffe, team games with Ernest and orienteering with Steve Burrows. At lunch time Steve made a fire on which we popped popcorn, boiled nettle tea and toasted marshmallows! It was super!

The effort and energy put into each activity by both parents/carers and children was great and really made the day one to remember. A big thank you to Steve Burrows, Mrs Ratcliffe and Ernest for planning and delivering such a fun filled day for all.

  • Sports Day

    Mon 09 Jun 2014

    What a fantastic morning!

After a worryingly wet start to the day it started to dry up and all the Westfield Infant School team joined in to set up the field for Sports Morning. All the children arrived at school very excited and raring to go and the atmosphere in the classrooms was great. Once the children stepped outside to take their seats trackside they saw all the parents and carers that has come along to show their support and this made it all the more special.

Well done to all the children for trying so hard and having such great sporting attitudes, you were brilliant!

Thank you parents and carers for coming along and showing your support, it made the event extra special for the children.
