  • Class 4 Wharf Trip

    Thu 22 Jun 2017

Class 4 have had a fantastic day on their trip to the Wharf. They started the day so well by walking sensibly from school to the Wharf. We had fruit and a drink and then got on with the fun activities. They included:

Going on the bell boat with Nick. We all put a life jacket on and were given a paddle. We then got safely onto the boat and sat down ready to paddle around the lake. We all worked really well together to paddle the boat the whole way around! We even had a stop to look out for some fish. Can you remember the name of the fish we saw?

We then got a chance to go on a kayak on the canal. We used our rowing skills we learn from Nick and got all the way down to the Marina. We waved to narrow boats that passed us by. We incorporated some Maths into our paddling as we discussed quarter turns and half turns and demonstrated these turns on the canal. Before we took the boats back to the Wharf we stopped at the canal bridge and Ernest talked to us about the ropes that were used to pull the carts on the water. Can you remember what used to pull the ropes?

Finally we spent some time with Mr Burrows and he talked to us about different animals and their habitats. We had been learning about this in our Science lessons so Mr Burrows was really impressed with what we already knew. Can you remember which animal is cold blooded?

Afterwards we helped Mr Burrows build an impressive shelter which we could all fit inside! Then we all had a hula hoop competition and played some fun games.

We all had so much fun! Thank you to Mr Burrows, Ernest and Nick for a wonderful day.

A big well done to Class 4 for all being so well behaved and following the Golden Rules.

  • Sports Morning

    Mon 19 Jun 2017

The weather never seems to be perfect for Sports Morning! It is either raining, windy or as today rather hot!

We had an early start and managed to find some shade for the children to sit in whilst they waited for their race.

Thank you to those parents/carers who sent the children in having applied sunscreen, wearing a hat and with some water. Also thanks to the thoughtful parent who came with some large bottles of water and a huge bag of ice for those children who did not have  a drink with them.

Every child had the opportunity to participate in one race and this was followed by a race for pre-school children, Ladies and finally Gents!

Everyone did very well and had an enjoyable morning. We have got some beautiful photograph for you to enjoy. A big thank you to our official photographer for taking such a lovely range of photographs.

  • Year 2 Outdoor Adventures with Parent/Carers

    Fri 16 Jun 2017

Today many of the Year 2 children with a parent/carer attended Burbage Common to take part in a fun day of activities organised by Steve Burrows. Meeting in the forest first, groups were tasked with building a woodland den that would serve as a base for the rest of the day. After a number of warm up games which included problem solving challenges, freshly made popcorn and a welcomed coffee fix for the adults, teams were sent off to complete a number of activities for the remainder of the day. Activities included orienteering, where map-reading skills were tested, and forest-based circus skills where everyone was encouraged to work on their balance and perseverance for the more challenging of tasks. More opportunities for team-building and bush-craft activities kept all engaged!

Lunch was enjoyed in the shade of the trees and energy levels were topped up the the remaining activities. The day ended with some adult-child fast-paced challenges set by Steve.

The weather was perfect and all in attendance had a fantastic time. Well done children for your excellent behaviour around Burbage Common, adults did well too! A huge thank you to Steve Burrows and Diane Ratcliffe for organising the day and making it a memorable experience for all those able to attend.

Children, don't forget to mention your favourite part on our Guestbook. We'd love to see which activities were the most popular!

  • Blunderbus 'Dogs Don't Do Ballet' Year 2 workshop

    Thu 15 Jun 2017
Today, all the children in Year 2 had the opportunity to spend extra time with the Blunderbus crew after the performance in an interactive workshop. Children had the chance to ask questions, interact with the scenery and perform a funky ballet from the performance. The children then split into small groups to produce a short musical composition too. All the children fully embraced this exciting time and the behaviour was excellent!
  • Blunderbus 'Dogs Don't Do Ballet' with Reception Children and Parents/Carers

    Thu 15 Jun 2017

What a wonderful show we saw from the fantastic Blunderbus team again! This time we got to meet Lucy and Biff the dog who loved ballet! It made us laugh and we loved joining in with Miss Polly's dance school!

After the performance we went back into our classrooms and completed some dog activities. We also went onto the patio and into the trim trail.

It was a brilliant afternoon and all of the adults in Reception are very proud of the children's very good listening skills during the play.

Thank you to all the grownups who joined us this afternoon; we hope you enjoyed yourself.

  • Soil Association Gold Accreditation

    Wed 14 Jun 2017

After school today Mrs MacLauchlan and Mrs Moore went to Leicester College for the Junior Chef Final. Mrs Coleman was actually in the kitchen supporting one of the finalists from a Burbage school.

During the event Westfield Infant School kitchen was awarded the Soil Association GOLD Award. This is a crucial part of the journey towards the school receiving the Food For Life GOLD Award.

It was a very interesting event and the 2 course meals that the  young

    chefs produced were fantastic.

The next step in the process will be for assessors to spend the day in school checking evidence, meeting pupils, staff and governors before they decide if Westfield Infant School can be awarded the Food For Life Gold Award. We will  keep you informed!!

  • Year 1 Outdoor Adventures Parent/Carer Event

    Tue 13 Jun 2017

This afternoon the Year 1 children and their grown-ups were invited to come and take part in some fun outdoor activities.

We all started in the Trim Trail where everyone was given the challenge to build a waterproof den. Miss Hamilton then threw water over them to see who’s was the best. Luckily no one got too wet!

After that we went onto the playground and took part in some sports activities. All the activities included; basketball, hockey, football, ladders and skittles.

Finally we all went into the hall where we met Mr Burrows who demonstrated different circus skills which we then had a go at. These included; devil sticks, diablo, spinning plates, hula hoops and stilts.

All the children had lots of fun and learnt new skills. Well done and thank you to all those who came.
