  • Healthy School Week - Day 5

    Fri 15 Feb 2019

Today was our final day of our Healthy School Week and what a great day it was!

There were so many families joining us for a healthy breakfast this morning and then going to the classrooms to participate in reading activities with their children. It was great to see so many of you. We know that the children really love these opportunities to share school with their grown-ups!

After their reading activities the children went into our special Healthy School Week assembly. It was lovely to see so many parents and carers staying to find out what we have been up to this week.

Thank you to the Parents and Carers that were able to join their children for breakfast this week. It’s lovely to see so many families making the effort to come in early and enjoy a healthy start to the day together. We know the children have had a fantastic week and learnt so many things about staying healthy.

We are looking forward to doing it all again next year already!

  • Healthy School Week - Day 4

    Thu 14 Feb 2019

Today has been another really successful day as part of our Healthy School Week.

It was the final day for the Life Education Centre in our playground. Classes 6 and 4 took part in sessions. Please ask them about their exciting learning.

Today the Year 2 children had their turn taking part in a Street Dance session. Again the children had an amazing time and learnt how much fun keeping fit can be. Please ask them to show you some of their new moves!

This afternoon Year 2 took part in a Cadent gas Carbon monoxide workshop. The children all learnt about this poisonous gas that you cannot see, hear, smell, taste or touch. After exploring places where this gas can be released from (children, can you remember them?), there were some drama activities linked to our new learning.

Children will be bringing home a Carbon Monoxide detector this week. Please position this in close proximity to one of the following: a gas boiler, gas hob/oven, wood burning/gas fire.

Tomorrow is our last day of Healthy School Week, so please come and join us for breakfast and then reading in the classes. In the morning we will also have our Healthy School Week assembly. Parents and Carers are more than welcome to join us and find out what the children have been learning about. We are sure you will be impressed!

  • Healthy School Week - Day 3

    Wed 13 Feb 2019

Today saw another fantastic turn out of parents/carers coming into school to have a healthy breakfast!

Again it was great to see so many of you joining your children for reading activities in their classrooms.

Class 3, 5, 7 and 8 visited the Life Education Centre today. If your child is in one of these classes, please ask them about their exciting learning.

Reception and Year 1 children all took part in a Street Dance lesson today! It was so much fun and fantastic exercise! By the end the children could dance a whole routine and did really well at keeping in time with the music. Don’t worry Year 2, you will have this opportunity tomorrow!

Year 2 had a super experience visiting Westfield Junior School this afternoon to listen to their brilliant choir and take part in singing themselves. The songs were all from Mary Poppins and they were so uplifting and enjoyable. We even got to join in the singing and dancing as part of a healthy activity. We warmed up our voices, stood up really tall and used all our lung capacity to join in the singing.

All sort of exciting learning such as cooking, learning about food groups, designing a healthy meal and more has been taking place in classrooms. Remember to ask your children what they have been learning about in their classes today.

We hope to see as many of you as possible joining us for breakfast tomorrow.

  • Healthy School Week - Day 2

    Tue 12 Feb 2019

We've had another busy and brilliant day for the second day of our Healthy School Week.

It was lovely to see so many families enjoying a healthy breakfast together again. Many families then joined their children in the classroom to take part in reading activities. The children are really enjoying sharing this time with you.

Remember you can come and have breakfast and join in with the reading activities all week!

Today we were all really excited to see the Life Education Centre arrive on the playground. All children will have the chance over the next few days to go inside and learn lots of interesting facts about staying healthy. Class 9, 10, 1 and 2 visited the Life Education Centre today. If your child is in one of these classes, please ask them about their exciting learning.

Tomorrow morning the Life Education Centre will be holding an information session for parents/carers between 9.00 and 9.15 a.m. This is a fantastic opportunity to find out more about what your child will be learning during his/her visit to the Life Education Centre. We hope to see you there!

Today the Year 1 children were very pleased to have a 'Relax Kids' session in the hall. The children responded well to relaxation techniques and had a lot of fun too! See if they can teach you any to do as a family. They learnt that being healthy isn't just about what you eat and exercising, it's so important to be relaxed and happy too. There was a focus on how having a range of feelings and emotions is normal and having strategies to recognise and deal with our emotions is important to keep us mentally healthy.

In their classes the children have again been learning all about different aspects of staying healthy. Why don't you ask them to tell you what they have been doing today?

  • Healthy School Week - Day 1

    Mon 11 Feb 2019

We have had a fantastic start to Healthy School Week today. Breakfast in school started at 7.45am and lots of families enjoyed eating together. This was followed by Family Reading in every class. This is an opportunity for adults to go to the classrooms with their children and join in with reading activities. Parents/Carers of Reception pupils were invited to look at the Learning Journeys too. This opportunity will continue every morning this week between 8.15 and 9.15 a.m. Please do come in off the playground with your child for 10 minutes if you are able to do so.

In every classroom the children have been working on various activities to promote health for life. Across the week children will be covering many topics including: the importance how to care for themselves well including hand washing, teeth brushing and bug busting, different forms of exercise and the effects this has on the body, a healthy a nutritional diet and the effects on the body, safety including both road and internet safety, first aid, the importance of sleep, mental health and happiness. If you ask your child they should be able to tell you what an exciting day of learning they have had. The photographs might also help to remind them!

Fitness in School took place all day today so every child has been able to take part in the exciting fitness activities. Please ask them what they enjoyed the most. Thank you for returning your sponsorship forms.

Tomorrow morning the Life Education Centre will be arriving. We are really looking forward to continuing our learning!

  • Year 1 Super Hero day

    Fri 08 Feb 2019

It was a wet and windy morning as the Super Hero's entered Westfield Infant School! After completing their normal morning jobs they had the task of creating a 'Super Hero Fact Sheet' explaining who they are and what powers they may have...

Then it was time for assembly. We flew into the hall calmly and settled down ready to listen to some amazing recorder music! (Well done Year 2, a super job if we say sop ourselves!). After the assembly we decided a Year Group photo was necessary to display and show off all the incredible efforts from the children and their grown ups. Please look through the photos to see it.

Onto Power Maths! The Super Heroes set about representing numbers to 50 in a variety of ways. They used all their previous learning and knowledge to show some brilliant ways of making the numbers shown. This included...ten frames, part-whole models, drawings, numbers sentences and even a few word sentences! WOW! Take a look at the photos to see this incredible work.

The rain stopped and the Super Heroes were able to move around the playground (Some people believe they controlled the weather!). During the afternoon the Super Heroes took part in a superhero PE session. This included moving like many different Super Heroes, escaping the Supervillain (the children had to move onto different apparatus) and placing themselves in different Super Hero lairs!

Over all it was a fantastic day and all the children looked SUPER!

Thank you to the grown ups for helping create such wonderful outfits...luckily there was no need for the Super Heroes to save the day (even though they were very ready to!)

  • Recorder Assembly

    Fri 08 Feb 2019

Today the first Recorder Group wowed us with their amazing recorder playing.

Mrs Parkes told us how in only ONE lesson they learn a note (B) and can play a whole song!  They played BB Blues to us beautifully.

After B they learn A and played a song called Thinking, followed by How About That, which has the notes B and A in it.

The next note they learn is G and we heard them play a round called Time Flies (well done, this can be extra tricky!)

Next we heard Hot Cross Buns and they ended with Chicken Cluck Waddle, both songs use the notes B, A and G!

Well done everyone.  It sounded wonderful.

  • Healthy Eating Show with Mr Ron

    Thu 07 Feb 2019

Today, all the children were introduced to King Custard, who owned an impressive castle with his daughter, Princess Vanilla. Unfortunately a wicked witch had placed a terrible spell on the King causing him to only eat unhealthy meals prepared by the villainous chef.

Can you remember why eating lots of unhealthy meals was a problem for King Custard and could be a problem for us too?

With the help of the children (and a friendly ghost that scared away the villainous chef), the King and his daughter were able to eat healthy meals prepared by a 'Healthy Eating' chef!

The children did a fantastic job sorting foods into 'Healthy Choices' and 'Occasional Treats'

Children, can you tell your adults at home at least three items that could go under each heading?

Mr Ron was very impressed with the enthusiasm and knowledge demonstrated by the children and the show has been an excellent lead in to next week's very exciting Healthy School Week.

Look out on our website for daily updates!

  • Safer Internet Day 2019

    Tue 05 Feb 2019

Today we thought about how to stay safe online through the national 'Safer Internet Day' campaign. The aim of Safer Internet Day is to inspire a national conversation about using technology responsibly, respectfully, critically and creatively.

    This years theme is

     'TOGETHER FOR A BETTER INTERNET'

We heard a story about Zap and Zoom who made the right choices when playing a game called 'Space Race' these choices included:

asking a grown up if they could go online and not putting their 'personal details' online.

We also talked in classes about how we all use the internet and what rules we already had in place at home!

We were impressed with how much the children knew about being safe online.

For more information on how to keep your family safe online please click the following link to our e-safety page.
