  • Author Visits Westfield

    Wed 22 Mar 2017

Today, the children were lucky enough to meet Atinuke, a children's storyteller and author. All children heard a very old story (with unknown origins) orally retold by Atinuke. They were all captivated and found it shocking when the lizard stole more than half of the salt from the tortoise. How naughty he was!

Children, can you remember how lizards in Nigeria escape from children sneaking up on them?

During the day, Year 2 pupils had the chance to meet  Atinuke in smaller groups. Atinuke shared some snippets from many of the stories she has written and introduced us to two of her characters which feature in many of her books: Anna Hibiscus and 'The No. 1 Car Spotter'. Children listened very well. They enjoyed the opportunity to ask Atinuke questions during the session about being an author, life in Nigeria and about the books she has written. What fantastic questions you asked! It was great for Atinuke to explain that writing takes time and effort and also that editing/improving is so important. We're sure the children understood this from their peer-marking they do in class!

Atinuke told us a clever way the president of Nigeria tries to ease all the traffic jams. Can you tell your adults at home what it was? (Clue: number plates and Maths)

During the book sale on Wednesday, adults and children were able to purchase one of the many books written by Atinuke and get it signed too! We're sure the children and adults will thoroughly enjoy reading about Anna Hibiscus and 'The No. 1 Car Spotter' and treasure the books for years to come.

  • Year 1 Stop, drop and roll

    Mon 20 Mar 2017

This afternoon Year 1 had a visitor called Lance who was from Leicestershire Fire Brigade.

We learnt lots of really important information including:

    - How to stay safe on the roads and in a car

    - To never play with matches

    - What to do if our clothes catch fire

    - How to get out of a house when we hear the fire alarm

We watched a film about Francis the Firefly who found some matches and we learnt that we should never play with matches.

    Can you answer these questions:

Can you remember what to do if you find some matches or a cigarette lighter?

Can you remember what to shout and do if you hear a fire alarm?

What should you do if your clothes catch on fire?

How should you safely cross the road?

Thank you to Lance for coming in to talk to us.

  • Year 1 Dinosaur Day

    Thu 16 Mar 2017

    ROOAAARR!

This term Year 1 have been learning about dinosaurs. We have looked at; fossils and what they can tell us about the past, the different types of dinosaurs that lived, the specific features of these dinosaurs and their existence.

Today we were able to put our knowledge to the test and learn even more about dinosaurs. We talked about their diet, size and behaviour. In particular the T-Rex!

We also met a baby T-Rex called Jack and a 7 year old T-Rex called Millie. It was amazing to see the size of a 7 Year old T-Rex and learn how much they grow (we don't think we will be that tall in a years time).

We were also treated to a delicious dinosaur dinner which included dinosaur biscuits!

Please have a look through the photos of the day.

Can you remember the answer to these questions?

What is the name of the tallest dinosaur ever discovered?

How many houses tall was this dinosaur?

Dinosaurs can have up to how many teeth?

What is the name of the smallest dinosaur ever discovered?

What do you call a person who discovers fossils?

  • Year 2 visit a Potion Exhibition at Westfield Junior School

    Wed 15 Mar 2017

Year 2 pupils were invited across to the Junior School to have a look at some of the fantastic work Year 3 had been doing as part of their Potions topic. Children enjoyed looking at the weird, wonderful and totally amazing potions which included lists of ingredients, 'warnings' and the effects that the potion would have. A potion to make everybody friends was a particular favourite with the children. There was also an opportunity to see some of the work pupils had completed based on 'George's Marvellous Medicine' by Roald Dahl, a book familiar to Year 2. Children watched snippets of the recent assembly based on the topic also.

Thank you for sharing your work with us here at the Infant School and a huge 'WELL DONE!' to all the Year 3 children.

  • Teddy Bears picnic - Class 7

    Thu 09 Mar 2017

Today Class 7 had their Parent / Carer event.

We all gathered in the hall for a teddy bears picnic.

We started the session by sitting on blankets with our teddy bears and listening to the Teddy Bears Picnic story.  We then had lots of different activities and games to take part in.  We all enjoyed making sandwiches and designing picnic bags to put them in.

At the end of the session we had lots of fun sitting together and eating our sandwiches with our teddy bears.

Thank you to all of the parents and carers that came along - it was great to see you all!

  • Reception Stickman Visit

    Tue 07 Mar 2017

What a fabulous two days we have had on our Stickman Trip at Beaumanor Hall!

The children were extremely well behaved and all the grown-ups were very proud of them.

The bus driver commented on how polite the children were, as did the ladies at Beaumanor Hall.

All children participated in four activities during the day to develop their physical and coordination skills. We all went for a journey in the woods to find lots of funny faces on the trees, can you show your grown-ups one that we found? The children were running up and down the big hill, playing poo sticks, climbing trees and even played with a bow and arrow. Can you tell the grown-ups what was your favourite part of the day?

  • Boundary Farm assembly

    Tue 07 Mar 2017

In assembly last Friday, the children that had been on our second trip to Boundary Farm helped Mrs Davis to tell everyone what they had learnt.

They remembered lots of information about lambing season and told the other children that the farmers only get 3 hours sleep each night when the lambs are being born!

We are already looking forward to our next trip at the end of April.

Again we would like to thank Richard and Rachel, the farmers, for their continued support.

  • Class 7 Stickman Trip

Yesterday Class 7 joined with the EYFS mainstream classes to go on the Stickman trip.

We all had a fantastic time completing the different activities in the sunshine!

Today we have looked through all the the photographs from the trip and talked about what our favourite bits were.
